Since I will be having a few people at my son's birthday gathering, is it considered a 'party'? Like it will be me, my spouse, my son, and then there will be my son's friend and his parents, making it a total of 6 of us.
Maybe another friend of mine will come to our party- which will be her and her 2 kids. So if she and her kids come, it will be a total of 9 people.
*Is this considered a "party" or a "gathering" if its 6 or 9 people at our house?

i think your intention is what determines whether or not if its a party. usually if me and friends get together just to hang out (usually unplanned) we call that a gathering. if its planned for a purpose and i invited people i would call it a party. doesnt matter if 2 people or 20 people showed up.

A Birthday Party

Party: "gathering of people to participate in an activity".

In this instance, the group of people gathering will celebrate the anniversary of your son's birth.

I'd say the numbers for a party are "two or more" since you can have a private or intimate party with just two persons. Example: You can "party" on your wedding anniversary with just your spouse. Hopefully you both are celebrating your marriage date.
